Mr Joe Meara – Consultant Interventional Sonographer, Extended Scope Physiotherapist, Independent Prescriber

Joe Meara is an Advanced Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist and Musculoskeletal Sonographer with extensive experience across elite sport, the NHS, and private practice.

After qualifying as a physiotherapist, Joe developed his clinical expertise within the NHS, working across orthopaedics, rheumatology, and musculoskeletal services. He has built a diverse career spanning professional football, rugby, and the world of ballet, where he gained specialist insight into the management of complex sporting and performance-related injuries.

Joe is highly skilled in the use of diagnostic ultrasound to assess musculoskeletal conditions and is trained in a broad range of ultrasound-guided interventional procedures, including joint and tendon injections, nerve hydrodissections, calcific barbotage, and shockwave therapy. His approach centres on accurate diagnosis, tailored rehabilitation, and evidence-based interventional care to optimise outcomes for his patients.

With a strong belief in a collaborative, multidisciplinary model, Joe works closely with orthopaedic surgeons, rheumatologists, and sports medicine physicians, ensuring patients receive the most effective and comprehensive care. His particular clinical interest lies in managing persistent musculoskeletal pain and helping patients return to the activities they value most, from elite performance to everyday function.

When not working, Joe is passionate about an active lifestyle and enjoys foil surfing, wakeboarding, and mountain biking. His personal enthusiasm for movement and performance underpins his professional ethos: empowering patients to stay active, recover fully, and avoid unnecessary surgical intervention.

Joe is registered with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC).  Joe is also a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and a Member of the Consortium for the Accreditation of Sonographic Education.
