Pilates
Pilates is a 'mind-body' form of exercise designed
to re-balance the body. Pilates focuses on starting all exercises from
a central core of stability. From this central core
pilates works by adjusting the intensity of the exercise and the
resistance.
Abnormal patterns of movement can be altered by
focusing on breath control and precision of movement.
The pilates technique is taught either through mat
exercises or the use of machinery. Mat work exercises are
designed to promote core stability, flexibility, endurance, postural
and body awareness.

Stott Pilates is a contemporary approach to the
original mind-body exercise method pioneered by Joseph Pilates. A
progression in pilates that incorporates modern exercise science and
rehabilitation principles, it is a safe and highly effective low-impact
way to improve core strength and balance the muscles around the joints,
improving the way your body functions, looks and feels.
The program focuses specifically on the five basic
Principals:
- Breathing
- Pelvic placement
- Rib cage placement
- Scapula movement and stabilization
- Head and cervical spine placement
This will develop a strong postural base, core
strength, suppleness, flexibility, grace and balance, as well as to
improve general body awareness.
Then a sport-specific exercise programme can be
designed to establish correct method and neuromuscular recruitment
patterns to develop the control and ability to move the body more
efficiently, so limiting the risk of injury.
Classes are kept small to enable the quality of
instructor attention needed to achieve best results.
Rona Bennett has been doing
Pilates for 4 years to help alleviate back problems and migraines. She
has taught Pilates for 2 years, having trained with the Pilates
Foundation at the Scott Studio Somerset.
Teresa Hunter's interest in
exercise and movement started many years ago when she joined an aerobic
‘Jazzercise’ class in the US. From then her
enjoyment of choreographed exercise continued for more than a decade
during which time she also undertook training in teaching aerobics.
Relocation to the UK brought a temporary halt to
any form of exercise. In an attempt to gently reintroduce exercise back
her life she discovered Pilates eight years ago. Since then her
enthusiasm for this method of exercise has continued to grow as she
regularly sees the benefits gained by this controlled and thoughtful
movement programme.
As a 'Pilates Foundation' Matwork Teacher Teresa
has completed one of the longest and most thorough training courses
available, gaining a distinction upon completion. She is also an Advanced
Instructor member of 'The Register of Exercise Professionals'.
